The Blaze and Lady Blaze Harriers took the bus southeast to the foot of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga for the McCallie Invitational.

In the first race, the Mixed JV, Blackman finished sixth with 192 points. Kyle Dodson led the youthful team with a 33rd place finish (21:21). Caleb Newton was three places behind in 21:42. Daniel Koraleski was 40th, Jack Allen was 41st (and the only upper classman to run this race). Newcomer Jack Dees ran a very respectable 42nd while Sterling Smith finished in 44th and Kyle Hamilton finished in 46.

Also noteworthy, a newcomer for the ladies, Lyna Malyvanh, ran her first five k race ever, and finished in 38th place for the girls.

In the girls’ Varsity race, the Lady Blaze finished in 10th with 216 points. This team continues to look stronger and build as the season progresses. For the first half of the meet many of the ladies ran very close together. Megan Roth again assumed her position as the top runner for the Lady Blaze finishing in 24th place (21:46). Amanda May finished in 43rd, Aiyanna Gallant finished 45th, Olivia Sorrell finished in 51st and exchange student Lily Nguyen finished in 53rd to close out the scoring. Senior Kayla Zuck, who spent the evening before serenading the crowd at the Blackman/Oakland football game, finished in 64th while Loren Osborne finished in 73rd.

The Blaze Harriers have faced several injuries and this week these events caught up with them. Without the services of the top runner, and number two coming off of a week and a half of little training due to injury, the boys still managed a sixth-place finish in the Boys’ Varsity with 192 points. Julian Young led the team led the team with a 46th place finish while Luke Porter was not far behind in 50th. Alex Ketel, working a long evening the night before with the culinary arts program serving for the football game, finished in 59th, while freshman and drummer Owen Vinson -who also had a very short night due to the football game – finished in 60th with a career best 19:50. Griffin Collins finished out the scoring with a 65th place finish. Chad Brandon finished in 70th while Aidan Crockett, recently returning from an injury, finished in 84th.

The Blaze and Lady Blaze Harriers will be training this week in preparation for the Cookeville Invitational this Saturday. Girls’ Varsity race at 11, the Boy’s Varsity race is at 11:30 and mixed JV is at noon. Teams will be off for Fall Break the weekend of October 7, but will return to action October 14 at Decatur, Alabama for the “Dew it on the trails” Invitational.
